Self-CompassionLearning how to show yourself compassion is a key component of therapy. The inner critical voice that we have internalizes shame and invalidates our own feelings. Essentially, it fights against our natural survival instincts. In order to live harmoniously and feel inner peace, Melissa teaches self-validation and how to empathize with yourself. These 2 components are the key healing agents through life. |
Self-LoveSelfish. A word that has such a negative connotation to it. A New Tomorrow helps you transform "selfish" into self-love and mindfulness. With the constant changes in our lives, Melissa values balance, and knows that no matter what is happening around us, we all have the potential to live balanced lives. Whether you are someone who is career driven and avoidant of close relationships, or someone who is dependent on others for love and worthiness, Melissa has a self-care lesson plan for you. Visit us to find out ways to live in the present moment and spend more time doing things that fulfill your needs and values. |
Self-LedEmotions can be scary and overwhelming when we don't understand their purpose and feel like can't control them. Rooted in the IFS concept of the mind, Melissa teaches you how to understand the purpose of your emotions and how to master being in control of them rather than your emotions being in control of you. "Bad" emotions don't exist. They feel bad or unpleasant when we don't understand them or when we act on our urges/impulses. |
Thinking of Starting Therapy?
Psychotherapy is not just beneficial for those are in crisis or who are unhappy in their lives. Everyone can benefit from therapy as it also has an educational portion that aims to increase self-awareness and self-understanding. Through the lens of psychology, individuals learn how their brains work and the innate reactions of our regulation systems during stressful situations. Understanding these concepts and basic functions of the brain lead to a sense of clarity and a deeper sense of authenticity. Focusing inward can be scary and foreign for most of us. However, overcoming these fears leads to a sense of control over your life and your relationships.

How Do I Know a Therapist is Right for Me?
"Therapist shopping" can be overwhelming and confusing as you try to choose someone who can be trusted with your deepest inner thoughts. When decided whether a therapist is a good fit for you, here are some things to keep in mind. For starters, you want to feel out the vibes between you and the therapist during your initial assessment or phone consultation. Feeling discomfort it normal at the beginning, but if you feel a sense of calm and acceptance with the therapist, you are likely looking in the right place. You will also want to get a sense of what approaches they believe in/practice. Does the approach resonate or make sense to you? Does it feel right or does it feel like you are fighting against your inner voice? It is helpful to write down some key terms and do your own research to see how you feel about their approaches to mental health and therapy. An underrated "tell" to recognize if your therapist is not a good fit for you is if you ever feel you need to filter what you say to them because you are ashamed. Therapists who work from their authentic self do not judge their clients and have a deep understanding of behaviours - especially the "undesired" ones.

How Do I Maximize My Time in Therapy?
I've decided to begin my therapy journey, how do I maximize my time with my therapist? For starters, we always recommend bringing a "therapy notebook" to your sessions to take notes on key concepts you learn and things you learn about yourself. Individuals who keep notes of their therapy progress tend to have higher "success rates" as they have something to refer back to when applying these concepts to their everyday lives. Another great way to maximize your time in therapy is to always have 2-3 things in mind prior to your session that you would like to explore or understand better. This helps to ensure that you get exactly what you need from your session.
